Mycoplasma is a genus of bacteria that lack a cell wall, making them unique among prokaryotes. These tiny bacteria are among the smallest and simplest self-replicating organisms known, with a size ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 micrometers. Due to their small size and lack of a cell wall, Mycoplasma can easily pass through filters that would trap most other bacteria, and can also survive in a wide range of environments. Some species of Mycoplasma are harmless commensals of the respiratory, urogenital, and gastrointestinal tracts of humans and animals, while others can cause a variety of diseases, including pneumonia, meningitis, and sexually transmitted infections. The CD Mycoplasma Gel Detection Kit is used for identifies more than 20 of the species most commonly found infecting cell cultures, including M. arginini , M. fermentans , M. hyorhinis , M. orale , A. laidlawi .
