Brief Introduction

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide, and almost all cervical cancers are associated with persistent infection with one of the high-risk human papillomaviruses (high-risk HPV). Approximately 200 reference HPV types are listed in the Papillomavirus Awareness (PaVE) database, and more than 40 HPV types have been identified to have high tropism for mucosal epithelia, with at least 12 HPV subtypes classified as high-risk by International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Of these, HPV16 and HPV18 subtypes account for approximately 70% of cases. Not all HPVs have the same risk of cancer development, so genotyping testing for HPV types can provide valuable information for preclinical and clinical studies, including identification of multiple HPV infections, pathogenesis studies, epidemiological studies, and drug development. Genome detection and DNA amplification assays are widely used for comprehensive HPV subspecies detection and identification.
