Streptococcus pneumoniae is a type of bacteria that can cause various infections, such as pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis and otitis media. It is also known as pneumococcus because of its role in causing pneumonia. It is a gram-positive, spherical bacterium that usually forms pairs (diplococci). It has a polysaccharide capsule that protects it from the immune system and helps it adhere to host cells. There are more than 100 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae that differ in their virulence and resistance to antibiotics. This kit is based on real-time reverse transcription PCR to detect Streptococcus pneumoniae .
