Gene Function Annotation

SPEAK TO A SCIENTIST

What is Gene Function Annotation

The annotation of gene function depends on the gene structure or sequence. The gene sequence or protein sequence is compared with mainstream databases to obtain the functional information of the gene, and finally, the predicted coding gene is functionally annotated. Common functional annotation databases are: Nr: NCBI official non-redundant protein database; if DNA sequences are involved, use the nt library. Pfam: A classification system for protein domain annotation. Swiss-Prot: High-quality protein database. KEGG: Metabolic pathway annotation database. GO: Gene ontology annotation database. COG: is a protein database created and maintained by NCBI. In bioinformatics, GO functional annotation, KEGG pathway enrichment analysis and COG enrichment analysis are commonly used to perform functional annotation analysis of differentially expressed genes. Through annotation and analysis of differentially expressed genes, the relevant biological significance is explored, so as to provide a theoretical basis for basic research on diseases, pathogenesis, drug discovery and other research.

Applications of Gene Function Annotation in Biology

With the development of sequencing technology, a large amount of sequencing data has been generated and various databases generated by integrating these data. In the process of biomedical research, when performing differential gene expression analysis, a batch of significantly different genes will be obtained, and the functions of these differential genes will be annotated and analyzed to understand the relevant biological significance. It can help us study the properties and functions of genes and proteins, and provide help for exploring the mysteries of biology.

  • Annotate the biological metabolic pathways involved in genes or proteins.
  • Annotate the biological processes, cell components, and molecular functions of genes or proteins.
  • Classify microbes (such as human gut microbes) with functional annotations.

What We Offer

CD Genomics provides customers with different types of gene function annotation analysis services. In addition to providing common KEGG pathway enrichment analysis, GO function annotation enrichment analysis and COG annotation analysis, we can also provide annotation analysis of other functional databases according to customer needs. We aim to provide customers with comprehensive annotation analysis services as much as possible.

KEGG Pathway Enrichment Analysis: KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) is a comprehensive database that integrates genome, chemistry, and system function information. KEGG has multiple sub-databases, and the most frequently used database is the KEGG Pathway database, which stores information about gene pathways in different species.

GO Enrichment Analysis: GO (gene ontology) provides simple annotations of gene products from functions, biological pathways involved, and location in cells. Therefore, the GO enrichment analysis can roughly understand the biological function, pathway or cell location of gene enrichment.

COG Enrichment Analysis: COG (Cluster of Orthologous Groups of Protein), the database is constructed based on the classification of 21 complete genomes of bacteria, algae and eukaryotes according to the phylogenetic relationship. It is very useful for predicting the function of a single protein or a protein in an entirely new genome.
