Animal Species Identification

Mitochondria are energy-producing organelles with their own genetic material and inheritance system, and are commonly found in animal cells. The high copy number of mitochondrial genes makes them easy to detect, and the conserved region of mitochondria ensures that probes are not affected by individual variation or species differences. Because of its unique maternal inheritance pattern and high mutation frequency, it has been widely used in the fields of biological evolution, population structure, phylogeny and molecular markers.

The mitochondrial genome has two typical characteristics

  • Fast evolution, high abundance and simple genetic pattern.
  • Conserved and compact structural features (e.g. cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, COI).

CD Genomics has many years of experience in mitochondrial DNA sequencing services. With our deep and solid expertise and extensive project experience, we are committed to delivering data results to you with the highest speed and fidelity. Our mitochondrial DNA sequencing technology plays an important role in the identification of animal species. To date, we have successfully completed species identification based on mitochondrial DNA sequencing technology for a variety of animal types, including invertebrates, arthropods, insects, fish, reptiles, and birds.

Our mitochondrial DNA sequencing technology

We determine animal species and assign unknown species to genera or species based on PCR amplification and sequencing of the conserved sequence COI in animal mtDNA, and comparing the sequencing results with known sequences in public databases.

Mitochondrial DNA sequencing based on NGS

  • Targeting the vast majority of animal-like mitochondria, and relatively small mitochondrial genomes.

Mitochondrial DNA sequencing based on long-read sequencing

  • Mainly for cases with large mitochondrial genomes, and a large number of repeat regions, etc., with complex structures, resulting in poor sequencing coverage, which cannot be looped using only second-generation random sequencing.
  • No high-quality mitochondrial reference genome for cases where the reference genome of closely related species cannot be looped.

Mitochondrial DNA sequencing to identify animal species

  • Classification and identification of animal species.
  • Rare wild species conservation, providing new ideas for animal species and age identification.
  • Regulation and inspection of trade in products of animal origin.
  • Mitochondrial DNA sequence variation as a marker for population genetics and germline genesis studies.
  • Analysis of genetic variation in geographic populations.
  • Study of phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary patterns.

The development of mitochondrial sequencing technology, powerfully applied to species identification, will reduce the traditional identification methods for human and material resources needs, accurate identification of species and individuals, while mitochondrial sequencing technology will provide the basis for the conviction and sentencing in the illegal animal trade, provide methods for biological detection at import and export ports, combat crime and contribute greatly to the protection of animal resources.
